Fosselman’s Ice Cream Co.
Established in 1919 this neighborhood ice cream parlor has been serving the San Gabriel Valley for over one hundred years. Fosselman’s has been passed down through three generations while brother John and Chris Fosselman are the current owners. Before them it was their uncles, father and grandfather that ran the business.
Upon walking in the sweet smell of vanilla and sugar fill the air, the checkered floor and bins of candy at the front make for a small town America smack dab in the middle of car dealerships and a bank. Fosselman’s Ice Cream Co. sits on an aptly named Main Street in the small stretch of a city called Alhambra about 10 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
There is always a regular waiting in line, children filling the chairs dripping in ice cream and an amicable feeling that something has just slowed down for all of us when inside this building built in 1905.
The flavors reflect the diversity of the San Gabriel Valley servings it large Asian population with taro root, red bean, and lychee to name a few. There is also Oaxacan chocolate and dulce de leche while still serving up classic flavors like vanilla, chocolate, English toffee, rum raisin and peppermint. Cookie Monster also known as “the blue ice cream” is a popular choice for the little ones with it’s Oreo cookies, graham crackers and cookie dough pieces in a luscious blue vanilla base. With 48 flavors to choose from there is something for everyone.
Fosselman’s Ice Cream Co. ice cream is also available at the counter of the Red Car Coffee Shop at the nearby Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens. It can also be purchased in half gallons from Howie’s Market in San Gabriel.
